Educators, researchers, and vendors together

Our Position on NCLB and SBR

We agree, in principal, with NCLB and the SBR mandate; schools should invest their money in products which work.  Without effective oversight, however, this mandate has had no meaning.  Neither educators nor sales representatives — no matter how well-intentioned — always have the time or expertise to comply with the SBR mandate.  The research community has established standards for rigor and reliability which better set the standard for educational research.  It is those standards, in light of NCLB, which Educational Underwriters, Incorporated seeks to preserve.

The simplest answer to this dilemma is a seal of approval which is clearly displayed on products to assure educators that a product is scientifically research based according to NCLB.  Oversight of educational research standards should be through none less than educational researchers.   The intent of NCLB was to raise standards for education.  EdU shares that intent.  We invite vendors to share our vision of making SBR good for schools.  Together, we can take ownership of NCLB.

Our Background

Educational Underwriters, Incorporated was founded by two public school administrators who had grown frustrated trying to ensure that the educational products they purchased for their schools met NCLB requirements.

While working on their PhD in Educational Administration and Curriculum Supervision through the K20 Center at the University of Oklahoma, they began to examine the Scientifically Based Research dilemma more closely. They quickly discovered that no entity existed to certify educational products as SBR and NCLB compliant.  Through a collaboration with the K20 Center for Educational and Community Renewal at the University of Oklahoma, EDU was born.

Two industry visionaries stepped forward to help found EdU:  Jens Holstebro, President of Phonic Ear, Front Row Division and Darrel Ward, President and CEO of eInstruction Corporation.

EdU’s mission is simple — Certify the Research Behind Educational Products so schools can better meet NCLB requirements. Meeting the Intent of NCLB.
